Daily Market Brief — 2026-07-23
A quick, public read on the pre-market tape: two major earnings reports, firmer oil, and higher yields.
Market backdrop
US equities closed Wednesday little changed — the S&P 500 slipped 0.14% to 7,498.96, the Nasdaq Composite eased 0.57% to 25,690.90, and the Dow was essentially flat at 52,218.58 (−0.01%). Under the surface the chip complex was strong: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) jumped about 5.2%, with Super Micro up roughly 26% on a record backlog.
The after-hours session shifted the mood. Alphabet reported Q2 revenue up 24.2% to $119.8B with cloud revenue up about 82%, and beat on earnings — but the stock fell around 3.3% after the company lifted 2026 capital-spending guidance to $195–205B. Tesla posted record quarterly deliveries (about 480,000 vehicles) yet missed on profit as operating margin compressed to roughly 1.4%, and the stock dropped about 5%. Thursday's futures pointed modestly lower (Dow −0.35%, Nasdaq-100 −0.39%) on that pair of reports, with the VIX up about 6.7% to 17.75. Intel reports after Thursday's close and Honeywell before the open.
Sector rotation
Energy remains 2026's standout: the energy sector ETF (XLK's counterpart XLE) is up roughly 9% in July and about 29% year-to-date, keeping its lead over technology (up about 23% YTD) as the Iran-related oil premium persists. That said, Wednesday's strong semiconductor tape shows the technology complex is trading headline-to-headline rather than in one-way retreat. Index divergence Wednesday was mild, so there was no clean cross-sector signal — more a case of energy's macro-driven leadership continuing while large-cap tech reacts to individual earnings.
Rates, the dollar & regime
Treasury yields firmed, with the 10-year near a two-month high around 4.66% as crude climbed (Brent about $94, WTI about $87) amid continued Strait of Hormuz disruption and a US crude inventory build against 43-year-low emergency reserves. Bonds have been falling alongside equities, offering little cushion. Gold pulled back about 1% to below $4,100 as markets leaned toward the possibility of Fed rate hikes, while the US dollar index sat near a six-month high around 106.3 — the firmest safe haven on the board. The overall tone: a mild risk-off tilt with an inflation-and-rates overhang.
